    Hollywood Thriving Amid Recession

Wondering how Hollywood is holding up in the recession? Look no further.

This morning, a group of the best in the business joined me for a roundtable discussion on the reasons for Hollywood’s success. That group included Mike Medavoy, chairman and co-founder of Phoenix Pictures, who has produced 17 Academy Award-nominated films like “Rocky,” “Annie Hall,” Platoon,” One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” Silence of the Lambs,” you name it; Tom Stephenson, president of Rave Motion Pictures, the largest exhibition chain in the country with digital projection, and Tuna Amobi, S&P equity analyst for media & entertainment, one of the BEST in the business. Is that a mouthful or what? If you know me, you know that I love movies and these guys are the gold standard.

See why Hollywood is on fire. Attendance will be at the highest level in 20 years if it remains at this pace. A happy story and one to keep an eye on, literally.

Alexis here is a follow up on Wilcox Theatres which open back in November. Results within Vicksburg have been real positive. I've attended several movies there already. One drawback the teens I suspect want to see a box cinema here once again. Now Wilcox could face problem with the white population here becouse Vicksburg Ms/Warren County is African American.More African american films over white let's say. I talked to some to one of the teens and she told me she'll continue to go to Clinton 10 Cinema. I believe the lack of choice is playing into this and the fact that Vicksburg didn't have a cinema for over 18 months the metro markets are still in control. I was in Panama City Beach,Florida last week for Vacation and I saw Transformers2 at the Grand Theatre at the Peir Park Mall. Sold out house. Some of the locals wonder why this town can't support a stadium cinema like the metropolitian areas can. I tweet u some ideas too about the major cinema chains too.

There is trend returning in the movie cinema sector. Mall cinemas have fallen out of favor. Some across the United States have closed--just Google it and you'll see some pop up all over the United States. The returning trend has been the box cinema. Especially with the stadium cinemas which are seperate from the shopping malls. Box Cinemas have been making a comeback for sometime. When Wilcox Theatres opened here almost 6months ago in the old mall, some teens were disappointed that a new box cinema away from the mall wasn't built. One cinema that is out is business is Village Theatres. The company went bankrupt back in September. When I Googled the company I learned they had a real bad rep in not taking care of their rented properties. Another fact I learned is the larger chains like Regel Entertainment,Cinemark, and other high end cinemas turned Vicksburg becouse of population size. That problably didn't sit to well with certain city leaders, not to mention its other bad rept the fact that it has a bad service rept and a chamber of commerce that wants some of the money pie but its taxes most like scared some of the cinemas off. My news idea is this: why not look at the closing of Mall cinemas and see how they affect mall propertiers like CBL Associates and thier competitiors.
