What to Expect From Your TV Soon

This morning on Money for Breakfast I sat down with Glenn Britt, Time Warner Cable's CEO to discuss increased competition in the New York market with Verizon, triple play, the future of television viewing and why they invested in the Clearwire venture with Comcast, Google and Intel.

After the segment ended, he told me that he will demand VOD (Video on Demand) at the same time that network and cable content providers offer their shows on the Internet. He also made news recently about saying he plans to pay less for content if it is freely being offered on the internet. How much less? He wouldn't tell me exactly. He said he'll negotiate on a case by case basis.

When I asked about the future off camera. He said they have a prototype in the works that will be available for testing in six months, that allows easy access to the Internet from your TV screen. They will not sit by side by side and work simultaneously. If you are a broadband customer, have internet and cable service with Time Warner, the new modem will allow one person in one room to view the internet on the tv and another person in another room to watch TV. This is a BIG bet for them! Giving the end user the freedom to store information on any tv in the house and letting the end user decide how they want to watch content.

OMG - this gut thinks consumers 'love' not fast forwarding through commercials. This twit needs a reality check. With 33% time spent exposed to direct advertising, the increase in product placements, the growing banner ads *on top* of the content... pff. Its gonna help improve (read: lower) this nations obesity and 'couchpotatoeitis' problems. Mainstream medias greed *is* becoming its own demise. MP3 trading, DVR's - take the hint you greedy money grubbers. For every new greed driven product you may create, theres a 1000 motivated hackers out there just chomping at the bit to circumvent your efforts. Give consumers fair, *quality* product and we gladly pay for it. I will not pay any more money for the likes of 'dancing with the stars' or other so called 'reality' drivel. For the record - TWC is being sued by the city of LA for its shady business practices and how it repeatedly screws its customers.

Smart move to invest in wimax. Content is moving to the internet and cable/satellite monopolies will start to lose their chokehold. You can get lots of great, free television over the internet today. But the real future is in the proliferation of niche programming content. The internet is providing an affordable broadcast solution for the "little guys". Check out Zipityzap.com . It's free and (for you couch potatoes) it even works with a wireless remote control!
