    Taking Action Against Cancer

    Heard the news about Senator Ted Kennedy and an inoperable brain tumor? Heard about Senator Arlen Specter's reccurence of Hodgkin's Disease? :( Ever wondered how much government funding is dedicated to cancer research? We did!

    This morning on Money for Breakfast, I interviewed Daniel Smith, president of the American Cancer Society's Cancer Action Network. Did you know that $4.8 billion is given to the Cancer Institute? The budget for Health and Human Services is about $70 billion. Did you know that that number has not increased in five years, yet 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will get some form of cancer? Three-thousand people a day are diagnosed with cancer! All of us have lost someone in our lives from cancer.

    How does that $4.8 billion number compare to defense spending? We are projected to spend $479.5 billion on defense in 2008. The total discretionary spending for the government is $941.4 billion.

    Will cancer funding get another look given the two very highly regarded Senate leaders and their individual battles with cancer? Take a look.

From the West Coast, I don't get a chance to view most of your morning show but I do read your blog. Cancer, we need to find a cure for all kinds of cancer. Everytime I turn around either a family menber, friend or work mate is going thru the battle of chemo or other such stuff. I'm hoping that we give the pharmaceutical companys some assistance to increase their R & D on cancer.

When I heard of Senator Kennedy's condition, a thought came to me. If he was an ordinary citizen in Canada, there would be a 4 month wait just to get an MRI and another 4-6 month wait to receive treatment. I wonder what his condition would be then? Yet this is precisely the kind of "universal Health care" that he is advocating. Canadian healthcare is great if you are 30 and having babies but 76 year old men with brain tumors have a much more dire outcome. (Of course if he was the Canadian equivalent of senator, perhaps he would go to the front of the line, or maybe just to the USA for timely treatment). Mary
