Symbols of New Orleans

By Alexis Glick

It’s just about 6 p.m. and I am now on my way back home from New Orleans. It has been such a busy and exciting couple of days. I arrived in New Orleans at noon yesterday and now I am en route to Dallas on my way back to New York. Flying to and from New Orleans on direct flights was impossible. The flights were booked solid. I had to fly through Houston on my way down.

So time for honest observations and behind the scenes gossip!!! :)

First of all, I finally had the pleasure of meeting Greta Van Susteren. I’m a big fan! Think she’s a great interviewer and has a natural curiosity that makes her a terrific journalist. She’s very cool and I admire her incredibly strong work ethic! If you haven’t seen her blog, check it out.

Second, I’m glad that I got to go back to New Orleans, even if it was only for 24 hours. There is something so special about this city. I know this is going to sound strange but the environment and the way people communicate and embrace one another reminds me of living in New York City after 9/11. It’s clear that their lives have changed. Hurricane Katrina will always be a part of them. They’re very humble and very gracious. They are doing all that they can to rebuild and they welcome tourists with such warmth. They have this spirit and energy that says we’re going to rise up and be stronger, even if it takes us ten years to get there.

On Friday, before I arrived in New Orleans, I interviewed the newly elected Governor Bobby Jindal. What a superb person! What he has accomplished in four months is unthinkable! He has so much energy and enthusiasm. He is a man on a mission! He reminds me of the Energizer Bunny….he keeps going and going and going. Depsite all the rumors and speculation, I don’t think McCain will select him as his vice presidential candidate. Jindal is the newly elected chief executive of the state and the Crescent City needs his full attention. He brings hope and optimism, the business knowledge and drive to create and encourage business development. The greatest risk he has is that he doesn’t continue to deliver at the pace that he has been delivering. As far as I can see, the people are thrilled to have him as governor.

The story that touched me the most and the one that I will never forget was meeting Carmel, a driver with Carey, a local car company. He was an older gentleman. Had the most honest eyes and warmest disposition. He told me stories about his family. He has eleven kids and thirty seven grandchildren! He grew up in New Orleans. It’s home for him. After the hurricane, his family spread out to find new jobs, new homes and proper schooling for their kids. None of his family members have returned back to New Orleans — they remain in places like Atlanta, Houston and Baton Rouge. They now spend only holidays together.

Carmel’s story is the norm now in New Orleans. Families, generations of families that lived down the block from one another now live hundreds of miles away from one another. They have created new lives and put down new roots. It’s sad to see the change. For the ones that came home, family is about making new friends and creating new families. Together, they hope they can bring New Orleans back. I know they will!! :)

Thanks for the signed picture today at the NCTA.
I also found it interesting talking to the many cab drivers the past few days and hearing their stories since Katrina. It seems like usual our goverment over reacted and tried to fix the issue by throwing money at it w/o a real plan ( Iraq?). Many I talked to are still frustrated by the red tape to rebuild their lives. there is alot of bitterness towards the fact so many recieved money w/o deserving it while others who did are still waiting.

But in all seriousness. Prior to Katrina always spent a week in July of each year in NO. Spent hours driving thru and just looking. Spent the evenings in the Garden district and French Quarter. The atmosphere all over the city was like no other I’ve ever seen in my life. Traveled the Pearl by boat many times and was astounded by the absolute beauty. I truly hope that it will return in all of it’s former glory.

Hi Alexis, I am a Gretawire blogger and enjoyed hearing about the New Orleans trip from your point of view. Greta said to let you know that the airlines are confused on their geography. Houston and Dallas to travel between New York and New Orleans?? I live in North Texas, so I know that is wrong!!

  34. Comment by Sam McCall

According to Greta your flight didn’t work out to well for you. Sorry you had a hard time getting back to NY. I wish the people well who went through Hurricane Katrina and I hope they can put their lives back together. It’s a horrible thing that happened to them and I hope this never has to happen again to anyone. God Bless all of them.
So it was your first time meeting Greta? I feel like I’ve known her for a long time now just being a blogger on her blog. I watch her show every night or most nights. I think she is cool. I want to meet her. I actually sent her an e-mail telling her how exciting I think her job is and that I wanted it. Like that’s really going to happen but I just wanted to share that.

I too am going to New Orleans this week to visit my grandchildren. They were displaced after Katrina as was much of my family. Most are back, rebuilding their homes and their lives. I have returned many times since Katrina and each time I have seen progress. It is a long effort but well worth it. New Orleans is a very special place. I have also met Bobby Jindal. We were eating char grilled oysters at Drago’s in Metairie. He was with his family and they are lovely people. He has a vision for the State and is a most refreshing change from the usual Louisiana politics. The future of New Orleans and Louisiana is bright. Laissez les bon temps roulez!

  51. Comment by FlyingStorm

I use to live in New Orleans. Right off the lake thier. I lived thier only one year but it is a beautiful city. Im happy to hear they have someone now that can actually govern. And I would like to see New Orleans play the Lakers in the finals. But I still will go for lakers coz I live here now. I just like to say if you havent been to mardi gras it too is wonderful. Anyways, I hope you plan a little early for your next flight. Maybe you wont have to take to many routes. And as for Greta, I think she is wonder woman. LoL

Not everybody gets a chance to see Houston — even through a jet’s tiny window. Actually, with the price of a plane ticket today, I would rather enjoy taking the scenic route; more for the buck, so to speak.

BTW, Greta sent me here from her blog. I’m a big fan of Greta’s, as well. She said to visit you, so I did. My kids should mind this well.

Hi Alexis, I’m here at the behest of Greta, and all I can say is I hope my flight on Saturday isn’t that late. I have to get to a party in Chicago.

I would love to get down to New Orleans, I spent quite a bit of time in Baton Rouge, but didn’t make that last hour down. Hope things are going better down there now.

  56. Comment by Gale M.S. in CO.

Hi Alexis, I was just browsing around the web and stumbled on your blog. You seem to be good at what you do, nice work. How exciting for you to meet Greta Van Susteren she is my #1 favorite on fox news. I remember when Greta covered Hurricane Katrina right after it happened, it was awesome. Greta likes New Orleans, I think it’s because she likes Jazz. Did you see her interview with B.B. King? If you missed, it was cool. Greta just had an interview with Laura Bush and Jena that was sweet; it seems Greta is very well liked at the White House. Greta went there for Easter. I wish On the Record with Greta Van Susteren sold copies of the shows, I would love to have a copy of Greta going to the White House with Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne! Did you know Ozzy and Sharon gave Greta a cat and Greta named the cat Ozzy! How cool is that!!! Greta really loves animals, sometimes she will post pictures of her pets on GretaWire, you should see that, people love it!!!

Alexis, I just wanted to take time and let you know that I like your writing and again nice work.
Well I have to go now, and watch On the Record with Greta Van Susteren; I missed the first one tonight.

And I am pretty excited about their new Governor too, Bobby Jindal (I think Louisiana needs him more than he needs the VP position right now).

She’s a true professional who has managed to maintain a down-to-earth, easy going style that I admire very much. Our hopes go out to all the folks in New Orleans. I know people from all over the world do want to see the city rise up again. The rest of us at Gretas blog would love to hear individual stories from the folks of New Orleans. I know that whenever we see posts about excessive spending like the 845 Billion given to the UN by Obama we are incenced that the charity has not begun at home in places like New orleans.

    Hi Alexis,

Greta sent me! But I did have family and friends that went (with the church) to those devastated areas near New Arlenes and brought, buses and trailers and truck loads of food, water, clothing, bedding and tents. They traveled all the way from the Oregon Coast and gave their all to these families. The sight that met their them was unbelievable and brought tears to their eyes.

Many found that when it was time to leave they cried along with the devastated and homeless people. The people were so grateful, and they bonded and helped each other.

My post on Greta’s site would relate to this because of Cindy McCain’s causes:

I was very impressed with Cindy McCain’s causes.
A website were I read about these causes:
    http://www.johnmccain.com/About/CindyBio.htm
Cindy McCain has dedicated her life to improving the lives of those less fortunate both in the United States and around the world.
As an advocate for children’s health care needs, Cindy founded and ran the American Voluntary Medical Team (AVMT) from 1988 to 1995. AVMT provided emergency medical and surgical care to impoverished children throughout the world. Cindy led 55 medical missions to third world and war-torn countries during AVMT’s seven years of existence.

Greta suggested that I visit your site.

Read your piece on the “symbols” of New Orleans. It has been many years since I was in New Orleans, but I remember a very unique city that never went to bed and no one was treated like a stranger. It is reassuring to learn that a dynamic leader has been uncovered in the new Governor of La. There is no other place in this country, or maybe even the world for that matter like New Orleans. Hopefully one day the saga and devastation of Katrina will be a distant memory while long time residents celebrate the reincarnation of a great city.

  90. Comment by Annie D.

    Alexis,

Your portrait of New Orleans was as upbeat as the people and situations you describe. It was my home for 55 years, and I truly thought I would never live anywhere else. The spirit of New Orleans is unique, combined with the history, the wonderful food and the capacity of its people to show love and friendship. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

By the way, I am a loyal GretaWire fan, and she gave her bloggers a link to you, too.

Two of my children moved out of state in the last two years. I miss them and their families deeply. Phone and computer chatting just does not give one the satisfaction one gets with “face-to-face”.

Hi Alexis - Greta asked us to check out your site. Great piece on NOLA. I love it there. I live in Louisiana. Haven’t been to N.O. in awhile. Plan to get back there soon. I often compare it to New York City - with it’s energy and uniqueness. So many treasures there - every where you look, something different. Oh, and we do love our Greta, too!!!

    Alexis,

Greta asked that we come see your blog. Great article. Your turn to tease Greta some.

Good Morning Greta, Alexis and fellow bloggers,

Well, its great to meet everyone here for coffee this AM… Alexis we were asked by Greta to say ‘hello’, well HELLO.
Wishing New Orleans the best - it will come back - I heard the new Govenor is really someone who will attack the problems head on…
Well, every one have a great day!
See ya later on Gretawire…… :)

    Hi Alexis…
I too lived in New Orleans for 2 years in the late 80’s. I was truly awed by the French Quarter, Preservation Hall and 2 seasons of Mardi Gra. I worked in Chalmette, which was all but destroyed by Katrina.

Glad to see Greta bloggers behaving…………

Thanks for another look at New Orleans. It needs to be brought back……….

    HI Alexis-

I just wanted to let you know I liked the story about Katrina.

Good luck with the blog. I hope you have a way of preventing name-jacking as that was always a problem on Greta’s blog…

To Mary in Tampa and David Lawson, I will post on this blog from now on as there are some people on Gretawire who love to do what G Bush has done and extirpate dissent.

hello,Greta sent me. that’s all I was going to say, but your story about the cab driver has driven me to comment.
How can it be possible that reporter’s still don’t understand why these displaced people don’t return??? Does finding that out not strike any of you as the real place to go for the story?
It reminds me of all the comments reporter’s make about the Cuban Americans in Miami, that love baseball, but don’t support the Marlins. Like that’s some big mystery when to folks that live there, it’s well know. So, it leads me to believe the media doesn’t want to report the story.
back to displaced families in NOLA; why would all those people stay where they’re at? Think about human nature for a moment. Think about the fact that you don’t know what you’re missing if you’ve never had it, think about the torture those folks went through, and now, think about how the heck Nagan was re-elected.
I see no-one writing the story that matters about Nola, not one of you! Why aren’t these family’s going back? Who are they, where have they gone, when did they decide not tog go back, and how has their life improved or not from their lives pre katrina.
Write that story and I promise you, a Pulitzer prize will sit on your book shelves. That is, if you can get your network to ok it. If they won’t, perhaps that becomes part of the story.

  131. Comment by Sunny in NC

I mispoke, Miami does support the MArlins, its the ballpark that’s the problem.

    Hey there,

    Helping Greta out–

she sent us to say hello and peek at your site–

I liked what I saw too.

Followed Greta’s link to your blog. My cable company does not provide Fox Business yet, so I only see you folks when you cross over to FNC. I didn’t realize that there were so many beautiful women into money. Well, on second thought I did know that, but I didn’t know they were into making money. Hmmm…. I think my words are traveling past the point of no return…..
