Millennials: Electing the Next President

By Alexis Glick

Do you know what a millennial is? Or the millennial generation? It’s the first group to come of voting age in the millennium!

This group, approximately 47 million millennials ranging from 18 to 29, is expected to play a major role in the race for the White House. An AP survey indicates that more than 3.5 million first-time registered voters are going to the ballot boxes this year.

Reader’s Digest is calling 2008 “The Facebook Election.” They say this could be the first time voters 30 and below determine the future president of the United States. If you’re Barack Obama, that’s music to your ears! Of those surveyed by Reader’s Digest, 55% of those voters favor Obama to McCain’s 33% in a head-to-head contest.

Why is this group so important and how will they change the race? Carl Canoon, the Washington bureau chief of Reader’s Digest joined us to discuss their findings.

Honestly as Gex-Xer,I was born in ‘61,I might add,I feel like that both parties have overlooked my generation. As an Xer I’m a member of the largest generation, that dwarves the baby boomers. Yet every presidental election cycle we’re overlooked. I have no complaints about the Milleniuals but every media cycle during the presidental election I feel like our generation is slighted. No polls aren’t taken on what our generations want. And all becouse Millenials support Obama so what. How about about us GenXer’s we’ve made impacts too. I can tell you honestly twenty years ago, when I was in college no political pollster Demorcatic nor Republlican asked us what we think. I voted for Reagon.
But I feel with this political cycle that us GenXer’s are being slighted. MSNBC,CNN they haven’t covered us Xer’s either. I would love to see poll among the GenXers on how we think about this election. It’s like we get the write off now. If Millinuals get covered why not cover the much diverse GenXer’s becouse some in the media brushed off as Slackers. We like to hear our voices too. Fair and Balance.

it’s disgusting. the government run schools have made mush out of the brains of the youth in this country. Obama is a cult of personality that the defeated socialists/commies of the hippy age have wet dreams over. McCain is an out of touch old man hasn’t ever been a part of the private sector work force. I’ll be the first to say that he’s a brave and honorable man for his service to the country, but his economics are so backwards, we might as well elect Hillbama. At least we’ll know what we are getting.

America is ripe for a third party movement. The GOP sold us out. We need to send them a message this time around. I’ll write in Ron Paul before I’d ever vote for McCain. I’m fed up with this. It’s time for Texas secession.
