Meet the Ad World’s Powerhouse
By Alexis Glick
The chief executive office and founder of WPP, Sir Martin Sorrell, joined me this morning on Money for Breakfast. WPP happens to be the World’s largest advertising group!!!
Sir Martin Sorrell’s personal story is a fascinating one. He founded WPP in 1986-1987 after he took a stake in a wire and plastics company which made wire baskets and transformed it into a worldwide marketing services company. WPP, now the world’s largest advertising agency has over $12.3 billion in revenue and owns and operates some of the best-known advertising agencies in the World including Oglivy, J. Walter Thompson, Burston Marstellar and Young & Rubicam. His digital holdings are just as famous and have garnered him quite a bit of attention over the years as he has looked to agressively migrate some of his business and mindshare to the digital medium, one which he is very excited about.
This morning we talked about the state of the advertising industry here in the U.S. and abroad. Why digital is so interesting? What made the MSFT/ Yahoo deal compelling? Why he is looking to purchase TNS, a London-based media and marketing research giant? Why he formed a partnership with Dell to set up a new agency called DaVinci and what it suggests about the future of the consolidation of a corporation’s marketing, branding and advertising message?
A very powerful story! He puts it all out there and tells us where the advertising and search world is headed. I learned a lot. Hope you enjoy it!
