A Hobby and a Crush
By Alexis Glick
Are you as excited as I am about the upcoming release of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian?
I know that I’ve been writing a fair amount about movies of late. The truth is my hobby (or place to shutdown my brain and enjoy a box of Milkduds or Raisinets) is going to the movies. I LOVE movies. Probably should have gone into the business. I try to see most of the well-regarded movies, which sometimes means seeing two movies a week. This week, I saw Redbelt and Speed Racer. I personally prefered Redbelt, a mixed martial arts movie. But that’s just me.
The latest installment of The Chronicles of Narnia will be released next Friday, May 16. Today I sat down with the new actor that EVERYONE is talking about, Ben Barnes. He’s exceptionally handsome and has a terrific English accent. It looks like has has a very bright future ahead. He looks like the next Orlando Bloom or Hugh Grant! Trust me :). Ben plays Prince Caspian in the new movie. He was discovered performing in a play called “The History Boys” in London and this is his first breakout role. Take a look. He’s single too!!

Alexis I’m a diehard movie buff.
I’m looking forward to seeing Prince Caspian. I saw the trailers to it back in the winter time around Christmas. But the one I’m looking forward to seeing is Indiana Jones and Crystal Skull. I believe that Caspian,Ironman, and Indiana Jones are going to be the summmer’s top grossers.
Anyway the real dillimma facing towns like Vicksburg Ms and other small and medium commuties is that mall cinemas, multiplexes can’t no longer remained open. When chains like AMC,CINMARK,Regel Entertainmment group close or sell thier cinema houses to cheaper operators those cinemas can’t compete against the higher end in a metropolitian market. Like over in Madison,Clinton,Flowood and Ridgeland I’ve been to some real fine cinemas. Always clean and neat. Now the other factors that contributed to old mall multiplex demise here was bad service, rude behavior. Another factor that contributed to CBL pushing out Village Entertainment was the fact that some black employees committed a crime. The worst thing a cinema can have is a a broken projector. Village didn’t even update the projectors where today’s cinemas like Malco 17 in Madison have digital projectors and sound. Now the real reason I belive Regel Entertainment sold the old Cinema over four years ago,was they weren’t getting a return on thier investment and they were undergoing chapter 11 bankruptcy too. I learned that in Wikipedia of all places.
Now in the October issue of Cande’s Nast Portfolio it revealed last year earings on the major cinama chains. Their earnings had dropped significantly over the previous years. And they have certain mindset which Sherry Redston criticized them for. I can tell you with this economy the way it is it’s going to be hard for cinema and independent cinema chain operators to get an audience back into the cinema house.
