Vytorin, Zetia….Where Do They Come up With These Names?

By Alexis Glick

Have you ever wondered how Merck came up with the name Vytorin for their cholesterol drug or how Schering-Plough came up with the name Zetia? What about Lunesta and. Viagra? What they mean? Why they are so complicated? And why they are so difficult to pronounce?

Today we talked to two experts: Bill Trombetta, President of the Brand Institute and Bill Johnson. Mr. Johnson, from Saint Joseph’s University, has worked with many companies to create names like Lunesta. Listen to how and why they are selected and how the FDA plays a roll. It’s something I’ve always thought about but never known the answer to.
